Re-characterization of the Red-lip Megalobulimus (Gastropoda: Strophocheilidae) from Peru with description of a new species Rev. Bras. Zool.
Borda,Victor; Ramírez,Rina.
Megalobulimus K. Miller, 1878 is a genus of land snails that includes the largest living snails in the Neotropics. The main goal of this paper was to review all species of Megalobulimus that have a red lip, and which are distributed in Peru. We carried out a detailed description of their shells and soft parts, and conducted a multivariate analysis on their shells and geographic distribution. There are two species reported from Peru, Megalobulimus capillaceus (Pfeiffer, 1855) and Megalobulimus separabilis (Fulton, 1903). Megalobulimus capillaceus is known to occur in three regions - San Martín, Huánuco and Cusco - but the Cusco population is undoubtedly different from all remaining populations, and is recognized herein as a new species, Megalobulimus...

Taxonomic congruence between external morphology and male and female genitalia characters of members of Rasahus Amyot & Serville (Heteroptera: Reduviidae: Peiratinae) Naturalis
Coscarón, M.C.; Díaz, N.B.; Povel, G.D.E..
The occurrence and degree of taxonomie congruence is analyzed between classifications based on the external morphology and male and female genitalia of the genus Rasahus Amyot & Serville, 1843 (Reduviidae) using multivariate analyses. The results demonstrate that a classification based on size differences, and a data set of ratios are incongruent with a classification of a set of characters of the male and the female genitalia. The last two classifications are congruent with each other at a speciesgroup level, e.g., that of the R. scutellaris and R. hamatus group. The classifications are discussed and a generalized phenetic classification is given.

Comparative anatomy of the male reproductive internal organs of 51 species of bees Neotropical Entomology
Ferreira,Amilton; Abdalla,Fábio C.; Kerr,Warwick E.; Cruz-Landim,Carminda da.
The anatomy of the internal organs of the male reproductive apparatus (MRA) of adults and pupae was compared among 51 species of bees, including representatives of six families. Four different types of MRA were found. The type I is present in males of the less derived families (Colletidae, Andrenidae, and Halictidae) and is characterized by three seminiferous tubules per testis, which are almost completely enveloped by the scrotal membrane. The type II is an intermediary between types III and I and is present in Melittidae and Megachilidae, as well as in some Apidae studied, being characterized by post-vesicular deferent ducts outside the scrotal membrane and by three or four seminiferous tubules per testis, except for Apis mellifera L., which has a...

An illustrated key to male Actinote from Southeastern Brazil (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae) Biota Neotropica
Francini,Ronaldo Bastos; Penz,Carla M..
In certain times of the year, Actinote butterflies can be vastly abundant in Southeastern Brazil, thus representing conspicuous denizens of our fauna. Their wing coloration allows for the recognition of five major patterns, which probably resulted from mimicry. Furthermore, examination of series of field-collected and reared specimens clearly demonstrates a high intra-specific variation in wing color pattern. In concert, inter-specific resemblance (mimicry) and intra-specific variation make it difficult to discriminate Actinote species from each other. This key aims at providing a tool for identification of male Actinote. To that effect, we provide diagnostic characters and illustrations of wings and male genitalia for 22 species. We hope that the clear...

Comparative morphology of two species of Caraguata Bechyné (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Galerucinae, Galerucini) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Groll,Elisa von; Moura,Luciano de A..
ABSTRACT Caraguata Bechyné, 1954 (Galerucini, Galerucina) includes 38 species exclusively Neotropical, among them two sympatric species, C. atricornis (Clark, 1865) and C. guaporensis Bechyné, 1958. Given the lack of morphological studies in this group, we aimed to characterize the adult morphology of two species, providing descriptions, illustrations and comparisons of structures of the head, thorax, abdomen and genitalia. The external morphology includes the description of head, thorax, abdomen and its appendices; the internal morphology comprises endosternites, and male and female genitalia. Some similarities were observed, such as pubescence, mouth parts, apparent sexual dimorphism on ventrite V, spermatheca and vaginal palpi. The main differences are...

Description of the males of Lincus singularis and Lincus incisus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae: Discocephalinae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Maciel,Aline S.; Garbelotto,Thereza de A.; Winter,Ingrid C.; Roell,Talita; Campos,Luiz A..
The Neotropical Lincus Stål, 1867 includes 35 species, thirteen of which are known only from females. Several species are vectors of Phytomonas staheli McGhee & McGhee, 1979, a trypanosomatid parasitic in palm-trees in South America that causes hart-rot, sudden and slow wilt diseases. The hitherto unknown males of L. singularis Rolston, 1983 ("swollen head" species group found in the oil palm Elaeis guineensis Jacq.), and L. incisus Rolston, 1983 ("hatchet-lobed" species group; found in the coconut tree Cocos nucifera L.), are described with emphasis on the morphology of the genitalia, and taxonomic remarks are provided. Males of L. singularis can be distinguished from other species included in "swollen head" group by their pronotal lobes with anterior...
